CHAPTER 9

“Aarrggh!” we sing like a choir as an entire crew of men wielding fire extinguishers mobilizes and puts out the flames while extracting every last one of us from what will forever be known as the big rig of death.

“Oh, thank heavens.” Mom pants as she flicks off her helmet.

I do the same while juggling both Frosty and Fish in my arms. The crowds in the stands here at the Cross Roads Stadium are going wild all around us as if we just pulled off the most daring feat known to man, and I think we just might have. It was called surviving Peggy’s driving.

“Are you ladies all right?” Starla Lightwood runs this way amidst the melee of the emergency workers flocking to the scene.

“We’re fine,” Peggy shouts with a wave. “We Southern women are a hearty breed. We can take the heat with the best of ’em.”

Mom snorts. “It’s Peggy’s world, and we’re all just living in it.”

She might be onto something, Fish concurs as she licks Frosty’s head silly. How many lives do you reckon we lost back there?

Four at least, if it wasn’t twenty, Frosty mewls as she shudders.

That’s the problem with you cats, Sherlock says, shaking his fur as if he just got out of the bath. You’re too dainty. We dogs don’t need nine lives. We’ve got strong bones. He takes a few steps and staggers. Oh no, I think that hot dog I wolfed down is ready to make a comeback.

“I’ve got this,” Georgie calls out as she rains bacon over him, and soon Sherlock is seemingly right as rain, ironically enough.

“Well, it looks as if your truck is in need of repair,” Starla says as she cranes her neck past us. “But don’t fear, the pit crew should have it up and ready to go by the time we clear the field for the next round.”

“Next round?” I balk.

“I’m out,” my mother declares, tossing her helmet to the ground.

“I’m in,” Peggy says defiantly. “A Southern girl never quits.”

“I like your moxie,” Georgie tells her. “I’m in, too.” She glances my way. If I don’t make it out alive, you can have my bottlecap collection.

Wonderful. Georgie’s bottlecap collection is actually pretty storied. Think notches on a bedpost, but replace notches with bottlecaps.

“Come on, Powerhouse Peggy,” Georgie says, carting her away. “Let’s refuel at the snack shack. Another dozen dirty dogs should get us through the rest of the night.”

“Yeah,” Mom balks. “And land you in the ER later, too.” If Powerhouse Peggy’s driving doesn’t beat those hot dogs to it.

Starla laughs. “You gotta love a good Southern girl.” She gives a wistful shake of her head. “I should know, my mama is from Tennessee,” she says while winking over at my mother.

Here’s our chance, Bizzy, Fish meows above the noise. We’d better shake her down before this entire place explodes in flames.

She might be right, Frosty mewls. Start talking. I’m not in the mood to trade in my fluffy white fur for ash. I wasn’t born hairless for a reason.
